5 reasons you should slow cook your way through summer

What comes to mind when you think about slow cooking? Hearty stews shared around the fire? Piping hot bowls of chicken soup?

Don’t get us wrong, slow cookers are pretty much the wizards of winter. But that doesn’t mean we stop using them in the hotter months! Before you pack away your slow cooker this summer, consider this…

1. Slow cookers are super economical.

Slow cooking works best when you’re using the daggiest cuts of meat – neck, shins, cheeks or chuck – which usually come in at a fraction of the cost of fancier cuts. Bulked out with plenty of nutritious veg, you’re getting plenty of bang for your buck in a slow cooked dish.

2. And energy efficient.

Your average slow cooker uses about the same amount of energy as a light bulb. And since you’re usually leaving it on during the day, it’s using power at a low-demand time. Win, win!

3. Slow cookers are super convenient.

Not to mention dead-easy to use. Most recipes are a case of dumping all the ingredients in the cooker and going about your day. No stirrers, whizzing or checking required.

Case in point? This delicious breakfast cake (bet you didn’t know you could make THAT in a slow cooker!).

4. Slow cooker meals are nutritionally dense.

The low and slow cooking approach keeps the good stuff in, making for super nutritious meals you can enjoy all year around.

Try taking the meat of the bones and serve as wraps with fresh salad greens and a cooling cucumber tzatziki.

5. And really tasty.

Who doesn’t love the rich, melt-in-your-mouth flavour of slow-cooked meat and veg? Plus, you can customise your slow cooker meals for the summer months and really get the most out of this handy kitchen appliance.

These fall apart, sticky, finger lickin’ ribs are the perfect addition to summer barbecues. Enjoy.
