5 quirky ways to cool down in summer (that don’t involve aircon)

Written By Unknown on Wednesday, 30 November 2016 | 16:10

It seems like in winter all we can do is dream of balmy evenings, lazy sun-drenched afternoons and getting some much-needed vitamin D at the beach.

Then summer actually arrives and we remember the back sweat, stifling humidity and trying to sleep in 40-degree heat!

In all seriousness, the heat can be pretty dangerous if you don’t look after yourself. With major heatwaves on their way in the Southern Hemisphere, here are some easy, natural and quirky ways to cool down. And they won’t run up your power bill like an air conditioner!

1. Try cooling herbs.

Herbs that have cooling properties include peppermint, fennel and coriander. Infuse these in some ice cold water for a refreshing sugar-free beverage.

2. Use your slow cooker.

Slow cookers use way less heat than an oven, so you’re not steaming up your kitchen. You don’t have to cook stews either – why not try sticky pork ribs or a breakfast cake?

3. Don’t wear polyester.

One reason we stick to natural materials is because cotton is much more lightweight and breathable. The other is because we don’t want the plastic fibres from synthetic clothes to pollute the planet!

4. Turn off the lights.

Yep, light bulbs emit heat, and it all adds up when we get into the heart of summer. Use a dimmer or switch off the lights in any room that you’re not using them (same goes for power outlets). It’s better for the planet and your electricity bill.

5. Eat curry.

Hear us out! In very hot tropical countries, folk will eat hot curry as a way to induce sweating, which cools us down. Just make sure to drink a big glass of water, too!

What are your best tips for cooling down in summer?
