5 energy foods (that give you a bigger boost than sugar)

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 19 October 2016 | 23:04

When we’re feeling flat and foggy, the first thing we think of is sugar.

No wonder – most of the “energy foods” on the market are jam-packed with the sweet stuff. Think energy bars, shakes and the dreaded Red Bull.

While they make give you a quick burst of energy, it’s very short-lived – and often leaves us feeling worse than when we started.

Instead, we should fill our bodies with nutrients that keep us energised for the long term. These five delicious foods channel our inner Duracell Bunny so we can keep going… and going!

1. Almonds.

Almonds are basically little, totally toteable packets of energy. They’re crammed full of energy-boosting nutrients like vitamin E, manganese, copper, vitamin B2, phosphorus and magnesium. While we reckon they taste great straight up, you’d be nuts not to try them in the form of our Almond Butter Bark.

2. Cacao.

Cacao is one of the richest dietary sources of magnesium you can get. Magnesium not only boosts our red blood cells’ ability to carry oxygen to our organs (more energy for all!), it also helps us keep our electrolytes in balance and regulate blood pressure. As if you needed another reason to try our Cacao and Coconut Smoothie

3. Spinach.

Popeye was on to something with his penchant for spinach. While it’s best known as a rich source of iron, the leafy green is also super rich in manganese. Manganese plays an important role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, blood sugar regulation, and brain and nerve function. We love eating our spinach in Asparagus + Spinach Quiche form.

4. Oats.

The energy in oats is absorbed by the body slowly, giving you a longer-lasting boost. They’re also packed with B vitamins and manganese, which help the body metabolise that energy even better – win, win! Our Porridge 3 Ways is sure to keep Mamma, Papa and Baby Bears going all winter.

5. Salmon.

Salmon is bonafide brain food. It’s incredibly rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help keep our brain performing at its best, as well as supporting cardiovascular health. Our fishy friends are also an amazing source of protein and heart-helping potassium. Salmon, Sweetcorn + Avocado Salad for lunch, anyone?
