Monday to Friday: smoothies for breakfast, hearty salads for lunch and roast veg for dinner. Saturday and Sunday: ALL OF THE SUGAR!
Sound familiar? You’re not alone! Thing is, many of us end up overindulging our junky sweet tooth on the weekend. Which can see us slipping back into our sugary ways when Monday rolls around.
And while the odd treat is okay, research has even shown that bingeing on the weekend could even be as bad as consistently poor eating. Want to stay on the healthy eating wagon? We asked the IQS team for their top tips.
If parties are your undoing…
It’s easy to get sucked into the party atmosphere… before you know it, you’re on your third glass of champagne and demolishing the bowl of Allen’s Party Mix.
Our marketing executive Alyssa’s trick is to eat before you party. “I hate the pressure of being hungry somewhere where there are crappy food choices you’re forced to make, so I always have a small serving of protein and veggies before I head out.”
And if you want to eat at the party, bring your own low-sugar nibbles. Our operations manager Meagan says, “I nominate myself to bring a dish. Then I’ll whip up some IQS-friendly brownies and watch people down them, none the wiser that they’re packed full of zucchinis.”
If you do decide to drink at the party, you can also have wine, beer and dry spirits, which are all fructose-free. Just make sure to do it in moderation, of course!
If you love Sunday brunch…
Going for brunch with a mate? Don’t worry, you don’t have to cancel just because you’ve quit sugar! Our writer Rachel suggests instead finding a sugar-free brunch treat.
“Suggest a café which you know has a savoury dish you LOVE (my favourite is corn fritters and salsa). You’ll be treating yourself without awakening the fructose beast.”
If you really can’t resist your local’s French toast, suggest going for an activity which doesn’t involve food.
“I book in an early morning bush walk with Sarah,” says our CEO Zoe. “This forces me to go to bed early so I wake up fresh and alert for a fast-paced walk ‘n’ talk with my quick thinking buddy.”
If you’re generally just a busy bee…
Yep, sometimes our weekends are so jam-packed that we struggle to even think about what to eat… and that’s when spur-of-the-moment donuts happen. However, if you plan your week effectively, you can pretty much avoid this sugar blow-out.
“Weekends are the time that I like to use my freezer stash – I pull out my soups and stews and reheat those in 10 minutes,” says our recipe developer and in-house nutritionist, Meg.
Camilla, our editor and senior writer, agrees: “I head to the markets first thing Saturday, then cook myself up a super delicious lunch at home (with plenty of Sunday can’t-be-bothered-Day leftovers to spare). That way I’m much less tempted to load up on the junk.”
What tips do you have for staying sugar-free on the weekend?
