Hi, my name is Tahlia Giumelli. I’m 22, a model (formerly Miss Australia) and a personal trainer. I also used to be a sugar addict.
Like, the type that can’t leave a block of chocolate sitting in the cupboard, so will eat the entire thing in one go. Yep!
When I found Sarah Wilson and the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program it was life changing, especially because I suffer from Crohn’s disease (an autoimmune disease that attacks the bowels).
But my journey to a sugar-free life hasn’t been perfect, especially now that I’m travelling. Can you imagine trying to backpack through Europe for three months without crossing paths with the sweet stuff?!
It’s not as if you can’t eat healthy in Europe. I had an awesome home-cooked paella in Spain, a Hungarian goulash made by locals in Budapest and even authentic grilled Portuguese chicken. I’ve visited fresh food markets and been shown incredible local places to eat.
But there have been setbacks, too… How could I not go and visit the most famous restaurant in Belem for a Portuguese tart? Or try the apple strudel in Amsterdam? Or eat the ice-cream cone donut in Prague? Then there are the hours spent on buses, planes and trains with sometimes nothing more than a vending machine…
Once you feed the sugar monster, it’s hard to stop.
I was recently reminded of my fresh food love after a week of sailing in Croatia. As you can imagine, there aren’t many healthy fresh options when you’re on a boat for that long. So the minute I stepped off, I bought a bag of fresh vegetables and a chicken. That night in my hostel, I cooked up a good old fashioned chicken and veg dinner!
Looking back on my trip so far, I know I could have cooked a lot more in my hostels, rather than eating out all the time. With a few more weeks to go, this will definitely be something I will try to do more often, especially now I realise how much I’ve missed a good home-cooked meal!
My goal is to apply some self control and use the knowledge I have gained through the 8-Week Program to be aware of what I am eating while I travel. My next destination is Italy, the land of pizza, pasta and… gelato. Eek, wish me luck!
Keep an eye on the blog to follow Tahlia on her sugar-free journey abroad! Have you ever tried to live sugar-free while on holiday? How did you find it?
