7 reasons to drink liquorice root tea

Written By Unknown on Friday 1 July 2016 | 00:57

It’s little secret we love a little liquorice root tea at IQS.

It’s naturally sweet, warm and nutty flavour makes it an excellent sugar-craving buster. But there are a lot of other reasons why this tea is top dog at the IQS offices. Kate Harrison at The Daily Guru has the scoop.

Liquorice root is one of my go-to everyday teas. It not only tastes delicious, it also has many benefits when it comes to the gut, respiratory system and adrenals.

Liquorice has traditionally been used as an expectorant, which soothes coughs and relieves congestion. It is also great for soothing sore throats and skin irritations due to its demulcent and anti-inflammatory effects.

Liquorice root tea is an essential in my kitchen pharmacy because it helps to heal many conditions, including:

1. Heartburn

Heartburn is that uncomfortable burning sensation experienced in the upper chest and throat after meals, which can be due to over acidity or poor digestion. Liquorice root tea is a great remedy for soothing the digestive tract and reducing inflammation and acidity.

2. Sore throat and chesty cough

The demulcent action of liquorice root tea is great for soothing sore and angry throats associated with throat infections. Next time you wake up with a sore throat, try and brew yourself some fresh liquorice tea and drink throughout the day for relief. Liquorice root is an expectorant, which means that it expels mucous and phlegm, making it great for breaking down congestion in the lungs, which causes a chesty cough.

3. Stress

When you are stressed, your adrenal glands work overtime producing adrenaline and cortisol, the stress hormones which are involved in the fight or flight response to stress. Liquorice root helps to nurture your adrenal glands and lower your cortisol, which can wreak havoc on your health if it is pumping throughout your body for long periods of time.

4. Hormonal imbalance

A classic herbal combination for polycystic ovarian syndrome is liquorice root and peony. These herbs help to reduce excess androgens (male hormone), which are involved in the hormonal imbalance that characterises this condition.

5. Inflammation

Liquorice root is a strong anti-inflammatory. So many conditions are linked to inflammation including skin conditions, hormonal conditions such as endometriosis, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and even cancer. This is why it is so important to keep inflammation at bay. By regularly drinking liquorice root tea, you help to reduce and prevent inflammation. So drink up!

6. Eczema

Liquorice root is an emollient with anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it perfect for soothing itchy and inflamed skin associated with eczema. Drinking the tea will help to treat the condition from the inside out, but you can also make a salve using liquorice root to apply topically.

7. Leaky gut

Our gut is meant to form a barrier to protect it from toxins and wastes. However, with leaky gut, the cell junctions are not closed properly which makes it leaky and permeable to toxins and wastes entering the bloodstream. Liquorice root is great for healing the gut due to its soothing and anti-inflammatory actions.

So there you have it! Liquorice root is truly a wonderful herb with many uses as a home remedy staple. It can be purchased from health food stores in tea bags or loose root. Using the loose root will make for a more potent tea with more powerful healing benefits. Simply add one tablespoon of the root to a tea strainer, add boiling water and steep for five minutes.

Enjoy!
