Pop quiz: Can you guess which of these items has more sugar?

Written By Unknown on Thursday, 2 June 2016 | 23:07

So you never eat ice cream. And you always opt for fruity muffins over chocolate pastries at the breakfast buffet. But are you really sure you’re making the healthiest choices? Some foods have more sugar than you’d realise!

Take our quiz below comparing the sugar content of five common foods. Then let us know how you score in the comments below.

(Unfortunately no, this isn’t a licence to gorge yourself on the lower-sugar option. Just another reminder that sugar is lurking in more surprising places than you think!)

1. The icy treat.

Do you reach for frozen yoghurt instead of ice cream thinking it’s the healthier option? It may be time to think again.

IQS: More sugar quiz ice cream frozen yoghurt

The verdict: The frozen yoghurt has more sugar.

Despite the healthy promises on the label (97 per cent fat free! Probiotic! Real fruit!) a stick of Bulla Frozen Yoghurt actually has a higher percentage of sugar than the Streets Splice Pine-Lime ice cream.

Although the smaller serving size might make you think otherwise, when comparing the equivalent amount of icy treats, 100g of froyo is packed with 18.8g of sugar, while the ice cream is fractionally lower at 17.8g.

Our solution? Avoid them both, and make your own sugar-free Splice Blocks.

2. The sticky sauce.

Before you slather your burger with bottled sauce, here’s what you should know.

IQS: More sugar quiz sauce

The verdict: The barbecue sauce has more sugar.

Despite the name, honey mustard is lower in sugar than most varieties of barbecue sauce. In this case, a 30g serve of barbecue sauce delivers more than three teaspoons of sugar, while the same amount of mustard has two teaspoons.

Our solution? Stick to plain mustard or make your own spicy BBQ Peach Sauce

3. The baked goods.

A fruity muffin must be healthier than a chocolate-filled pastry… right?

IQS: more sugar quiz muffin pastry

The verdict: The fruit muffin has more sugar.

In a not-so-sweet surprise, your seemingly healthy afternoon snack can pack in way more sugar than a more obvious offender like pain au chocolat.

One of these muffins has almost six teaspoons of sugar. The same-sized serving of pastry has three and a half teaspoons of sugar.

Our solution? Bake your own blueberry muffins!

4. The 3pm snack.

We’ve already busted the myth of healthy muesli bars, but how do they really compare to a block of chocolate?

IQS: more sugar quiz muesli bar or chocolate bar

The verdict: The muesli bar has more sugar.

This muesli bar has more than 40 per cent sugar, while the chocolate fares slightly better with 37.4 per cent.

Our solution? If you need something chocolatey to get you through the afternoon, opt for dark varieties. Or try customising your own muesli bars.

5. The sandwich spread.

Surely a spread made from fruit has to be better than a chocolatey one…?!

IQS: More sugar quiz nutella jam

The verdict: The jam has more sugar.

There’s no love lost between I Quit Sugar and the notorious “hazelnut” spread, but surprisingly it has a slightly lower sugar content than jam.

The sugar content in Nutella is 8.6g per serve (still a whopping 57.6 per cent!) as opposed to 9.9g per serve (or 66 per cent) of jam.

Our solution? Spread selectively, or make your own Sugar-Free Nut-Ella instead.
