5 amazing things you can do with turmeric

Written By Unknown on Saturday, 4 June 2016 | 21:04

It’s no secret that turmeric is one of our favourite spices. We like it in our bread, our snacks, we’ve even been known to whip up a batch of fermented turmeric gummies from time to time.

Phoebe Cleghorn from Eat Live Glow is equally passionate about the stuff. She shared five clever ideas on how to add a little more turmeric to your life.

We’re still not over our turmeric moment and that’s thanks to the staying powers of its incredible health benefits. It’s a potent anti-inflammatory, as well as being great for digestion.

Research also suggests that it’s a possible preventative for heart disease, cancer and the onset of Alzheimer’s. So how about reaping those benefits?

1. Make a turmeric latte.

If you’re trying to cut down on your caffeine intake or just fancy a lovely, warming drink, turmeric lattes can be truly delicious. They’re also pretty easy to make – check out our ultimate recipe.

2. Or a cup of tea.

For an equally delicious drink, turmeric can be used to make an immunity-boosting tisane (herbal tea) – simply add a teaspoon of fresh grated or dried turmeric to a mug with the juice of half of a lemon and a grating of fresh ginger, and allow it to infuse in hot water for a moment before drinking.

3. Use it in a face mask.

Turmeric powder can also have a brightening and smoothing effect on the skin – great for blemish scars and dark circles. Here’s how to make a nourishing face mask using the humble spice.

4. Sprinkle it into smoothies.

Thanks to the relatively mild taste of turmeric, its health benefits can be reaped without too much interference with other flavours. While you may not immediately think to add it to a smoothie, it can add a lovely warmth while complimenting sharp and sweet fruits such as frozen pineapple. Whizz these up with some spinach, protein powder and almond milk, and you’ve got a pretty complete smoothie.

5. Add it to rice.

Of course, you can add turmeric to your curries, but that would be far too obvious a point for us to make! As well, you can add a dash to your rice as it cooks – throw in some cardamom pods, too, to get a fragrant rice dish to complement your curry.
