Sugar face: it’s a thing. But do you have it?

Written By Unknown on Sunday, 29 May 2016 | 19:19

Are you in your forties and wondering why you still get breakouts? Or perhaps you’re in your twenties and noticing the beginnings of premature wrinkles?

Listen up: it could be “sugar face”. Dermatologists are increasing naming excess sugar consumption as a major cause of premature ageing, under-eye bags, chronic acne, dull complexion and everything in-between.

And it doesn’t surprise us at all. One of the top benefits of quitting sugar our 8-Week Programmers report is better skin. Reckon you’ve been overdoing it on the sweet stuff? Here’s how sugar might be affecting your face.

Excess sugar leads to acne.

We all knew junk food made our skin worse when we were pimple-prone teenagers, but somehow forgot as we got older. Acne is altogether absent in cultures that follow a Paleolithic-style diet (i.e. no refined sugar!).

This might be because sugar, as well as refined white grains, spikes insulin levels which can elevate sebum (oil) production. If you’ve tried everything and still get spots, it’s worth giving the sugar-free lifestyle a try.

Excess sugar ALSO leads to wrinkles.

Wrinkles are a natural part of ageing, but if you suspect your skin is maturing too quickly, it may be worth looking at your diet. Sugar, especially fructose, actually forms advanced glycation end-products (AGEs, ironically) which bind to and damage proteins like collagen. Collagen, FYI, is the very stuff that makes your skin plump and wrinkle-free.

So, to sum up, excess sugar could make you get wrinkles AND acne at the same time – that’s some Benjamin Button level madness! Save the sugar and make it into an exfoliating sugar scrub instead. Your skin will thank you for it.
