7 healthy snacks for kids (that will tame the loudest tantrums)

Written By Unknown on Monday, 23 May 2016 | 23:04

Giving in to a tantrum for a packet of lollies may seem like the easiest way to calm a hungry toddler. But it need not be.

These seven snack ideas are all healthy, tasty and almost as quick as tearing open a packet of Allen’s Strawberries & Cream lollies.

1. Fresh strawberries and cream.

Swap the chewy, sugary candy version for a plateful of real fruit and cream or coconut yoghurt. Your kids will enjoy the same sweet flavours, while the healthy fats will keep them satiated long enough for you to pack away the groceries.

2. LCM Bars.

The I Quit Sugar version of these popular snack bars take a little bit of effort to prepare. But you’ll be glad you did. Instead of plying your kids with enough sugar to turn them into Little Crazy Munchkins, our recipe is made with slow-energy releasing nut butter and fructose-free rice malt syrup for sweetness.

Plus they keep for a few days, so you’ll always have a healthy afternoon snack on hand during the week. (Not suitable for kids with nut allergies.)

3. Sweet Potato Truffle Balls.

These balls tick all the right boxes. They’re naturally sweet, an excellent way to squeeze in an extra serve of veggies and completely allergy-free, making them perfect for school lunch boxes.

4. Rice cakes with peanut butter and blueberries.

As long as you stick to natural peanut butters and rice cakes made with as little additives and artificial ingredients as possible this is an easy, tasty and healthy snack. Top with a few slices of kiwi fruit or a handful of low-fructose berries for a sweet kick.

5. Build-your-own bento box.

Bento boxes are a perfectly portioned, fun and creative way to impress fussy little ones. Get your kids to pick their favourite healthy foods (try falafel balls and dipping sauce, chicken wings with veggie sticks or a few slices of homemade nori rolls cut into bite-sized pieces) and serve them in a sushi-style bento box.

Customising a meal with foods kids actually enjoy means less chance of food waste. And they’ll love the feeling of eating like a grown-up too.

6. Healthy skewers.

Kids will eat almost anything on kebab sticks, so give them the healthiest options you can think of. Try bocconcini balls, cheese cut into cubes, cherry tomatoes, boiled eggs, olives or slices of vegetables. If you want to get creative, you can serve these sticking out of a sweet potato for a cute porcupine-like creature.

7. Peanut Butter Mousse.

Instead of threatening to “count to three” pull out the ingredients for this recipe instead. Because that’s exactly how many you’ll need to whip up a sweet satisfying snack.

Bonus: This mousse is healthier than any creamy treat they’ll try to talk you into at the supermarket. (Not suitable for kids with nut allergies.)
