We’ve already covered the best foods to eat for digestion and gut health. But now it’s time to face facts: what you eat doesn’t just affect your insides, it impacts the condition of your skin, too.
Sugar has been linked to a plethora of nasty skin-related conditions (everything from acne to ageing). But the good news is that many tasty foods can actually have a positive effect on your complexion. And we’re not just talking avocado!
1. Cacao.
A high-quality dark chocolate (we’re talking 85 per cent plus) is worthy of its superfood status. Not only is it a pretty healthy way to indulge your sweet tooth, but it’s good for your guts and great for your skin.
That’s because cacao contains high levels of antioxidants called flavanols. In addition to generally repairing the skin damage caused by free radicals, antioxidants have been found to improve blood circulation and skin hydration.
2. Brussels sprouts.
Short on serum? Brussels sprouts can be an effective way to improve the appearance of saggy skin.
Vitamin C has been associated with a lower likelihood of a wrinkled skin, and sprouts contain four times more vitamin C than oranges. (Plus they make for a delicious Winter Vegetable Sauté.)
3. Sunflower seeds.
A good-quality suntan lotion will do wonders for preventing sun-induced wrinkles (not to mention the risk of skin cancer). But if you’re looking for some extra protection, consider adding sunflower seeds to your skincare routine.
These pocket rockets may be tiny but they’re loaded with vitamin E, which can protect your skin from the sun and may also aid in healing wounds.
4. Gelatin.
Gelatin-rich foods like our gut-lovin’ gummies can help improve the appearance of skin in a number of ways. As well as reducing inflammation, the proline in gelatin produces collagen, the same protein that popularly features in many cosmetic anti-wrinkle treatments.
Go on, try a Coconut Marshmallow. Because you’re worth it!
5. Beans.
If Clearasil just ain’t cutting it, use this legume to zap your spots. With beans extremely high in zinc, a trace mineral which has been linked to reducing the appearance of acne, it’s little wonder they have been called “the magical fruit“.
