Drinking one soft drink a day can decrease the chance of pregnancy by 25 per cent!

  • A new study has found that drinking just one soft drink a day can decrease the chances of conceiving – for both men and women.
  • Women who drink at least one soft drink per day have a 25 per cent lower chance of falling pregnant.
  • This information was pulled from a study containing almost 4000 women and around 1000 of their male partners.

A few months ago, we reported on the detrimental effects soft drinks can have on your heart health

Now, new research from Boston University School of Medicine has revealed that sugary drinks also dramatically impact fertility and reduce the likelihood of conception for both women and men. While soft drink consumption has previously been linked to poor semen quality in men and lower fertility in women, this new study further illustrates just how severe that effect is.

And, the results speak for themselves. Women who drink at least one sugar-sweetened beverage a day have a 25 per cent lower chance of falling pregnant, while males have a whopping 33 per cent lower chance of conceiving.

The study’s lead author, Elizabeth Hatch, has warned those wishing to fall pregnant to reduce their soft drink intake.

“Couples planning a pregnancy might consider limiting their consumption of these beverages, especially because they are also related to other adverse health effects.”

We can now add reduced fertility to the list of health issues associated with soft drinks, which also includes obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease – just to name a few.

Surely this is enough evidence to support a sugar tax?!
