Add flavour (not sugar) to your meals

Written By Unknown on Monday 12 February 2018 | 19:07

Taking your dishes from dull to delicious can be as easy as adding a flavour bomb

From herbs and spices to citrus – this is what we add to our meals to maximise flavour, without relying on the sweet stuff! Plus, these options are all super versatile and can be added to a plethora of brekkies, lunches and dinners.

  • Lemon.

A squeeze of lemon can do wonders when it comes to bringing out flavour in your dishes. It’s seriously a food lifesaver! If you ever have bland food, add some lemon juice or even some zest and it will lift the taste exponentially – try it for yourself! Lime is also great for adding a little fresh twist to your dish.

  • Ginger.

Ginger is our fave spice to add to stews, stir-fries and soups because of its immune-boosting qualities and it can also be added to sweet dishes as well, making it super versatile. Our Gingerbread Smoothie is a particular favourite as it’s filled with warming ginger, cinnamon and cardamom.

  • Pepper.

Pepper is a classic for a reason, but it often gets overlooked in favour of salt – which we also love, but which is used liberally enough already. So, if you think your meal is missing a little something, try a crack of pepper – once you get over the somewhat spicy taste, you’ll soon come to really appreciate its subtle flavour!

  • Cinnamon.

This warming spice is the easiest way to add a little sweetness to your food. Mixed with Greek yogurt, sprinkled on sliced apple and even dusted on sweet potato before it’s baked – cinnamon is a wonder spice and works for both sweet and savoury dishes. It’s also great for lowering blood sugar levels, helping to bust any sugar cravings which may pop up. If you’re after more warming sweet spices, nutmeg, cardamom and star anise all fall into this category and they make great additions to baking. Our Chai-Spiced Banana Bread is a real winner!

  • Garlic.

We add garlic to pretty much everything – no joke. From soups, stews, baked veggies, roast meats and stir-fries – we mean everything! Our Cheesy Garlic Bread Muffins are a particularly great vehicle for it. Garlic adds a signature taste and smell to your meals – and is there a better smell in the world than garlic frying in olive oil? We think not!

  • ACV.

While Apple Cider Vinegar is great for your health – it aids digestion, improves your gut flora and helps to detoxify the liver – it also adds great flavour to food. We love adding a generous glug to homemade soups and broths and it’s particularly good in salad dressings – olive oil, lemon and ACV make a delicious and sugar-free salad dressing.

  • Fresh herbs.

Fresh herbs are massive flavour bombs which are super duper versatile and can be added to just about anything. We love adding rosemary to our roast veggies, basil to our salads and parsley to our soups. While dried herbs are great to have on-hand, sometimes you just can’t beat the taste of fresh herbs. This Freekeh with Feta, Roast Tomatoes + Herbs takes salad to another level thanks to the mixture of lemon, fresh mint and parsley.
