7 ways to save money on a sugar-free diet

While healthy eating is often perceived as being expensive, it’s actually dead-easy to save your pennies while leading a sugar-free life.

We’ve compiled a bunch of tips and tricks on how to save some dosh while nourishing your body with sugar-free, whole food goodies.

1. Shop at your local farmers market.

Not only are you supporting your local economy when you shop at the farmers market or local greengrocer, but you’re also guaranteed to be eating in season. The fruits and veggies on offer at farmers markets are usually in season, making them available in abundance and a whole lot cheaper. Eating out of season is an expensive exercise, as the food has to be imported into the country.

2. Eat out less.

While eating out may seem super convenient, it’s also super expensive compared to home-cooked meals. Plus, cooking at home means you can make bigger batches of food to sustain you for a few days – we love leftovers! Instead, save eating out for special occasions and try to bring your brekkie and lunch with you to work everyday as those lunches from the local café can add up quickly!

3. Stock up on staples.

Making sure your pantry is stocked full of staple items is a great money-saving technique as they’re usually pretty cheap. Grains like Basmati rice and oats as well as legumes like chickpeas and lentils are all super affordable and they last ages in your pantry. Plus, these babies are great for adding a nutritional punch to your dishes.

4. Buy in bulk.

When buying your staple items, it’s also handy to buy them in bulk. Grains and legumes are great to buy in larger quantities as they last for a long time, so they won’t spoil before you get around to eating them. There are a bunch of stores these days where you can buy bulk foods in only the amounts you need too, which works well for when you only need a small amount. There’s nothing worse than spending a bunch of money on a huge bag of something when you only need a small portion for a particular recipe.

5. Plan your meals.

Food waste has a massive impact on both our bank balance and the environment, so it’s important to store your food correctly to avoid needless waste. The easiest way to prevent food waste – and throwing money down the drain – is by planning out your meals. Then, you can take a strict grocery list to the market and only buy what you need.

6. Use your freezer.

Using your freezer correctly will ensure that you’re saving money and eating nutritious food. Freezing food that is on its way out is a great way to save money and prevent food waste – and it’s super simple to do. Get into the habit of freezing any leftover veggie scraps that you have as they can be turned into homemade stock – same goes with chicken carcasses! Or, cook up batches of rice and quinoa and freeze in individual portions. These become super handy when you can’t be bothered cooking – simply thaw, pair with some veg and protein and you’re done. Plus, there’s nothing worse than throwing out fruit and veggies that are limp and lifeless. When you notice them getting to this stage, stick them in the freezer to use later (hello, smoothie fodder!). Less waste = more money saved!

7. Crowd out.

Crowding your plate out with veg and pantry staples is a cost effective way of eating. While we love adding top-quality beef, chicken or fish to our dishes, it’s not necessarily affordable to eat these every night – so make your protein go further by filling your plate with green veg and complex carbs like quinoa or sweet potato.
