What is slow living + why should you embrace it?

Tired of living life in the fast lane? Slow living may be for you…

First, we had the Marie Kondo method of decluttering that swept through our homes and now, slow living has made its way into our lexicon – and for good reason! Brooke McAlary, author of the book Slow, describes the movement as “living in accordance with the important things in life. And more specifically, living in accordance with the important things in your life.”

For some people, this means living out of the city, self-sustainability and slow food, but Brooke emphasises her core values of slow living as letting go of things that no longer serve you, living mindfully and living in line with your personal values.

Here are three positive things that you can expect when you embrace the slow living way of life…

1. Cultivating self-awareness.

Slow living allows you to understand who you really are and what you actually want. The noise of modern living can often crowd out your own needs and wants thanks to the media constantly telling you what you should want and need in order to be happy. Becoming self-aware means that you tap into your desires and habits – basically, you gain an understanding of what makes you tick!

2. Let it go!

No, we’re not referring to the Frozen song! We’re talking about how slow living teaches you to let go of things on all different levels – you let go of clutter and junk, as well as commitments and expectations. This lifestyle helps you realise what’s important to you and the things that aren’t simply fall away.

3. Mindful living.

Mindfulness has become somewhat of a buzzword of late, but the actual practice still yields great results. Slow living allows you to make space for mindfulness everyday and it differs for everyone. For some, mindfulness is best practised through meditation and yoga, whereas for others it could be through hiking or painting. Trying to be present at multiple points during your day can have a massive impact on the outcome of your day.

And last but not least, slow living lets you do just that: live. Brooke sums it up perfectly in her book…

“It’s about life. The living part, specifically. It’s about paying attention to it and spending time in the noticing. The hand-holding and the tear stains and the sunrises and the uncertainties. The love and the anger and the joy and the envy.”

Is it time for you to embrace slow living?
