#Trending: Orange wine (again!)

Written By Unknown on Saturday 6 January 2018 | 14:03

We wrote about the orange wine phenomenon a few years ago and now, it seems, that this amber-hued tipple is back in vogue again…

Named for its apricot colour – not because it’s made from actual oranges – this wine is often described as a white wine that is made like a red wine. Meaning that the skin of the white grapes are left on during the fermentation process – the skins are usually removed in the making of white wine – which results in the orange tinge. And, it’s quickly surpassing its pink cousin rosé in popularity. Didn’t you hear that rosé is so last year?!

But, how much sugar is lurking in orange wine?

To be honest, we’re not entirely sure as alcohol manufacturers aren’t legally required to list nutritional labels on their products, including sugar content, so it’s hard to be sure of the exact amount of sweet stuff in it. But, due to the process in which orange wine is made – which is similar to the red wine making process – we can assume that orange wine sits somewhere between red and white sugar-wise.

What do we recommend sipping on?

When you do fancy a bevvy, we recommend sipping on beer, red wine or spirits like gin, vodka and whiskey. While you might think that wine has a lot of fructose thanks to the grapes, red wine is surprisingly low thanks to the fermentation process.

If white wine’s more your thing though, the key is to opt for dry over sweet. And always make sure you politely decline champagne and dessert wine as it’s literally swimming with sugar.
