Hands up if you’re often left with limp veg languishing on the bottom of your vegetable crisper?
Well, we have a super simple tip that will give your veggies another life. And, best of all – you’ll be saving your veg from contributing to the estimated $20 billion worth of food waste in Australia every year. That’s a win for the planet and your hip pocket!
So, how can you bring back limp veggies from their slack state?
The answer is: water. Yep, we’re dead serious.
Limp veggies are basically dying for a drink of water – unless they’re mouldy, in which case it’s time for the compost! Dehydration causes vegetables to turn droopy so a quick bath in water is often enough to fix them. There’s no specific amount of time needed to bring your veggies back to life either. Simply pop them into water and wait until they crisp up!
1. Carrots.
Bring your carrots back from the dead by cutting a little bit off the end and sticking it in a glass of water. You can also bathe cut up pieces of carrot to boost their crunch.
2. Asparagus.
Simply trim the woody bottoms off asparagus and stand stalks upright in a glass of water until they’re no longer soft and limp.
3. Whole lettuce.
If the roots are still attached to the lettuce, you can place the whole lot straight into a bowl of water. Otherwise, separate the leaves and submerge them.
4. Salad leaves.
Reinvigorate sad looking salad by simply popping baby spinach or mixed leaves into a bowl of water for a few seconds.
5. Celery.
If you’ve bought a whole celery, cut a little of the bottom off and sit it upright in water. Alternatively, if you’re celery is already chopped up, simply submerge it whole into a big bowl of water.
6. Potatoes.
Sick of wrinkly potatoes? Peel your spuds and pop them straight into water. Simple as that.
7. Broccoli.
Like with celery, all you need to do to spruce up that brocc is cut a little bit off the bottom and sit it upright in a glass of water. Or, to freshen up those florets, pop them straight into water.
8. Herbs.
Treat your herbs as you would flowers by trimming the stalks and standing upright in a glass. If it’s super humid, keep the glass in the fridge or refresh leaves by submerging in water before use.
9. Green beans.
There’s nothing worse than soggy beans so slice off both ends and place in water until they’re crispy again!
