It’s no secret raw treats have well and truly taken off…
But while they’re sold with all the buzzwords such as “healthy”, “gluten-free” and “refined sugar-free” (AKA table sugar), raw cakes, cookies and slices are far from health products. To prove it, we recently picked up three raw cakes from our local health food store (yes, really) to take a look at what’s inside…
The ingredients.
The ingredients list reads a little something like this: dates, maple syrup, coconut nectar, some berries (thrown in for good measure) as well as coconut oil and cacao powder, of course. So while yes, there’s technically no “refined sugar” in there, many of these ingredients are packed to the brim with the sweet stuff.
To break these ingredients down even further, maple syrup is pushing 40 per cent fructose and dates are around 30 per cent – not to mention that raw cake recipes often call for upwards of 12 of them!
So what’s the sugar content of these raw cakes like…
To be clear, the nutritional information was provided on the back of each packet, so no guessing games were played here – this is legit.
- The Rocky Road Slice contains 21.6 grams of sugar in this tiny 100 gram slice – that’s 5.1 teaspoons of sugar!
- It gets worse… the Peppermint Slice packs a sweet punch with 23.8 grams, which works out to be 5.6 teaspoons of sugar.
- And, lastly the Raspberry Torte has the least sugar, but still comes in with a whopping 19.4 grams or 4.6 teaspoons of the sweet stuff. Phew!
To put this into perspective, IQS (as well as the World Health Organisation) recommends eating no more than 6–9 teaspoons of sugar a day. So, if you noshed on one of these teeny tiny pieces of cake you’d pretty much max your daily sugar limit.
But there’s hope! We’ve seen how much the world froths raw cakes, so we’ve whipped up our very own IQS No-bake Blueberry + Cardamom Cheesecake. By leaving out all the nasties, we’ve made sure there’s less than one teaspoon per serve. Happy munching!
