12 health tips to get you through the 12 days of Christmas

Written By Unknown on Monday, 11 December 2017 | 10:01

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me…

Sorry guys, there’s no Partridge in a Pear Tree here!

Instead, we’ve whipped up our 12 hottest tips to make sure your silly season doesn’t get well, too silly…

1. Start the day in a healthy way.

Starting your day with good intentions is the best way to set yourself up for success. Whether that means noshing on a nourishing brekkie (have you tried a smoothie bowl?!), knocking back a shot of apple cider vinegar to help detox your liver or doing some morning stretches, make sure you start your day with your best foot forward.

2. Keep your immune system boosted.

It’s no secret that with a little overindulging and a bit of extra stress during the festive season, your immune system can take a hit. To make sure you’re fighting fit and ready to go on the big day, show your gut health some love – fermented foods and a lil’ kombucha will go a long way!

3. Stay active.

We don’t mean hitting the gym on your days off. A gentle stroll in the morning or walking to your Christmas party can boost both your metabolism and your mental health. In fact, one study found that a little exercise could help you control your appetite and stop you from overeating later. Sound like exactly what we need!

4. Arm yourself for the snack attack.

Even if you’re just nipping out for some festive bevvies with your friends, make sure to stock your handbag with enough snacks to get you through those hunger pangs. A secret stash of nuts or some protein balls will help you stay on the sugar-free path (your wallet will thank you too!).

5. Make sure you hydrate…

Whether you’re sipping on a few extra cocktails, or munching on a sneaky slice of cake, that’s a-okay. But, to make sure your liver and kidneys are coping with the extra sweetness, keep sipping on water. While there’s no hard and fast rule for how much you should be drinking, some indicators of dehydration include headaches or reduced frequency of trips to the loo – so if in doubt, drink some more.

6. Eat before you hit the road.

If you’re heading out to a Christmas function, the easiest way to make sure you don’t end up devouring the whole snack table is to fill your tum before you go. A nutrient-dense meal packed with veggies, healthy fats and protein – our Protein-Packed Poké Bowl will do the trick.

7. Stick to white spirits and red wine.

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again – ditch the sugary drinks! We totally want you to enjoy yourself, but what’s the best bevvy to reach for? Red wine and white spirits are very low in fructose, so as long as you don’t whip up a sugary soft drink concoction, they’re your best bet.

8. Choose alternative sugars.

If you’re craving something sweet (like we all do, at times), don’t be tempted by sugar itself. Instead, reach for natural sweeteners such as cinnamon and coconut to boost flavour, without the nasties.

9. Catch those zzzs.

While it may seem silly to mention, this time of year can be chaotic so it’s important to prioritise shut-eye. With your social calendar piling up, your whole body will take a hit if you don’t get enough rest, so when you can, tuck yourself up nice and early to get your seven hours in.

10. Master meditation.

With all the stress that comes along with the festive season, it’s important to take some time out for yourself. Whether you’re a meditation pro or just getting started, check out 1GiantMind to make meditation a daily habit. If meditation isn’t for you, don’t panic – there are lots of other ways to be mindful day-to-day.

11. BYO dessert!

We love volunteering to bring dessert to parties so we know there’s at least one sugar-free option. Our Flourless Berry Chocolate Cake is so fudgy and rich, but if you’re after something a little more festive, our Christmas Berry Swirl Cheesecake will satisfy everyone. Promise.

12. Don’t beat yourself up…

At the end of the day, Christmas only comes around once a year and it’s important that you enjoy the time you have with your nearest and dearest. So, our most important piece of advice is to not feel guilty about that extra slice of cake. Besides, our next 8-Week Program kicks off just after the new year – perfect timing we think!
