How long does it take for sugar cravings to disappear?

Written By Unknown on Sunday 5 November 2017 | 10:03

Step away from the chocolate!

If you’re experiencing cravings, we promise you’re not alone. Giving sugar the flick is no piece of cake (literally!).

We often get asked, “How long until my cravings pass?” And, while everyone’s experience is different, we know one thing for sure – they will eventually disappear! Promise.

For most people however, it’s around the two-week mark…

Fructose is a sneaky little thing as it has no off switch and no corresponding trigger in your brain to tell you that you’re full. That’s why you end up eating, and eating and eating those bickies, but still be both hungry and craving the sweet stuff (sounds like a lose, lose to us!).

When you give up sugar however, fructose no longer clouds your hunger-judgement, meaning that not only will you know when you’re actually hungry, but you’ll stop craving sweet foods too! Clever stuff!

As we said, most people experience withdrawals and cravings during the first week or so, but then very quickly start to welcome all the benefits of being sugar-free… like no cravings.

But in the meantime, if you’re tearing your hair out trying to resist those pesky cravings, try these tips…

  • Increase your intake of healthy fats to keep you satiated, or when the cravings hit, devour a spoonful of nut butter or coconut oil!
  • Protein can be particularly helpful when the biccies are calling your name. One study even found people who ate more protein for breakfast greatly reduced cravings throughout the day! BAE, anyone?
  • Try reaching for veggies too as they’re a good way to fill up, so there’s not much room for anything else…
