Meal deal lovers, listen up! You could be eating 30 teaspoons of sugar…

Lunchtime meal or sugar bomb? Perhaps, both…

Action on Sugar is calling for popular UK lunchtime “meal deals” to ban sugary items, as their new survey reveals they can regularly contain up to 30 teaspoons of sugar.

As meal deals offer a range of products to “mix and match”, selecting items that contain a sugar-laden sauce, fizzy drink and even confectionery, will increase the total sugar content.

In fact, a whopping 72 per cent of meal deals sold at Morrisons are high in sugar!

However, the survey also highlighted that by making simple swaps, customers can cut down on their sugar intake by choosing a lunch option containing less than two teaspoons of sugar. It’s simply about making healthier choices.

Chairman of Action on Sugar, Graham MacGregor, says, “Eating too much sugar is linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer and tooth decay. Supermarkets pretend to be on the side of their customer’s health to encourage loyalty, but this survey clearly shows that they are not. The government now needs to take decisive action to ban all promotions of unhealthy foods.”
