It’s fair to say that we love to stay on top of the latest trends when it comes to health and wellbeing.
So whether that’s a new fitness craze, stress-busting relaxation therapy or tried and tested training method, we’re always keen to explore what all the fuss is about. Here are our top three picks from the world of wellness recently…
Float therapy.
If you’re searching for a little Zen, then float therapy will definitely be right up your alley! Although the flotation pod looks like something out of Star Trek, once you’re inside, it’s amazing how relaxing the whole experience becomes. Also known as sensory deprivation, the high levels of Epsom salts in the water completely support your body weight and very quickly, all sense of time and space disappears. While there are a bunch of clinics across the globe now offering float therapy as a means of combatting aches and pains and reducing stress, if you’re based in Sydney, check out Koa Recovery.
Yoga… in the dark.
While the new craze to practise yoga in darkness goes by a few different names around the world, here in Australia, Flow After Dark events have become somewhat legendary. And, if you love yoga and music in equal measure, then this is definitely one trend to try! Essentially, you’re taken through a 90-minute vinyasa-style yoga sequence, all the while wearing noise-cancelling headphones.
Recently, our nutritionist, and resident wellness warrior Liv, had the opportnity to pop into the Sydney event… “I love the fact that you can totally tune out in yoga, or rather tune into yourself without the distractions of the outside world. When you’re in the dark and being instructed through headphones, you get to totally immerse yourself in the movement – and when accompanied by some sweet tunes, it’s a pretty cool experience!”
LISS.
You’ve probably heard the hype about HIIT training already, but what about LISS – AKA, low-intensity steady state cardio? Unlike the punishing, heart-pounding HIIT style of training, LIIS is a little more forgiving, encouraging participants to perform cardio exercise at 50–65 per cent of their max heart rate. As you aren’t required to push yourself as hard, it’s more sustainable for a longer period of time and, gentler on your joints. Even better? You don’t need to join a gym to reap the rewards. Simply go for a brisk walk, a long steady swim or gentle jog. Sounds good to us!
