Why we give a fork about food waste

Written By Unknown on Monday 25 September 2017 | 18:06

It’s no secret that we’re passionate about food waste.

And, when you discover that food waste costs the world as much as $940 billion each year, it’s not surprising that we have something to say about it!

When you’re cleaning out the fridge and throwing those limp veggies straight into the bin these stats probably don’t cross your mind, but it’s time to wake up and smell the garbage…

Food waste harms our environment…

Shockingly, a third of all food produced in the world is wasted, and in Australia specifically, that equates to four million tonnes of food that heads straight to landfill.

Landfill is where food waste does most of its damage, producing methane gas, and contributing to both global warming and climate change. In fact, eight per cent of all greenhouse gases heating the planet are caused directly by food waste.

That’s why cutting back on our waste has always been one of our core values at IQS! We harness the power of daggy cuts of meat and limp veggies to make delicious food. You might not know, but Sarah’s book Simplicious is also entirely devoted to how you can cook delicious meals with zero waste. Clever stuff, huh?!

It’s also costing us money!

Every wilted bunch of spinach and soggy zucchini that you throw out adds up. In fact, each Aussie household wastes $3,800 on food each year. We don’t know about you, but we’d rather pocket that cash. With our popular series ‘save from the bin’, we’re doing our best to continue spreading the word on how to use up that food to not only save your wallet, but the planet too!

For a whopping 306 recipes that are waste-free, get your hands on Simplicious today!
