The top 5 myths about quitting sugar – debunked!

Written By Unknown on Friday 18 August 2017 | 21:01

When people find out you’re quitting sugar, they usually have a LOT of questions.

Starting with – don’t you have to give up fruit forever if you ditch sugar?

This is one of the most common misconceptions about our 8-Week Program and no matter how many times we answer the question, it comes up regularly in our blog comments, on our social channels and within our community forums.

So, to help tackle this question (and a few others), we’ve debunked some of the weird sugar myths we deal with daily.

Myth 1: No fruit! Are you people bananas?

The truth: Straight from our I Quit Sugar founder Sarahs mouth:  “I love fruit. Some of my best friends are fruit. It’s a completely misinterpreted idea that we are anti-whole fruit.”

“The key thing is to get your appetite to a point that your hormones are recalibrated and you can work out how much sugar your body actually needs rather than craves. And to do that you have to go cold turkey. We reintroduce whole fruit in the final weeks of the Program and very clearly promote whole fruit in our cookbooks. I’m not the anti-fruit campaigner!”

Myth 2: How can you run a health program? Y’all don’t have any qualifications. I mean Sarah was once editor of Cosmo.

The truth: The IQS team are lucky enough to have two full-time nutritionists on staff who design all the meal plans and recipes as well as answer any curly nutrition questions that crop up. Plus, we have an entire host of healthcare experts (including doctors, dentists, dietitians and psychologists) on hand who work with us regularly to ensure we’re all up to date on the latest science and to help us support our Programmers as they go.

Myth 3: You’re all about eating meat and fat (and want everyone to do the same).

The truth: Our 8-Week Program is simply about quitting sugar and returning to an old-school way of eating that relies on JERFing. Sure that includes some meat, but the focus is actually on fresh vegetables and lots of them. Heck we even have an entire meal plan dedicated to vegetarians.

Myth 4: You claim you’re not a fad diet, but you’re cutting out an entire food group.

The truth: Put simply, sugar is not a food group. The food groups are vegetables, grains, proteins, dairy and fruit (which we do eat). In fact, added sugar is a discretionary item on the Australian food pyramid. So, once again, sugar is not a food group.

Myth 5: A life without sugar is a life half-lived. How can you honestly be happy without cake, cookies and candy?

The truth: We want to be happy! And we want you to be too. That’s why we use our 8-Week Program as an opportunity to help you break your addiction to sugar and find food freedom and true happiness. After which, you can eat all of the above! Just look at the delicious chocolatey masterpieces on the blog. From Flourless Chocolate Berry Cake to a Skillet Choc Chip Cookie – does this sound like a menu of a miserable eater? Nope, didn’t think so…
