Avoiding the flu can feel like trying to dodge that friend at a party – you both know you’re there and you spend the whole time desperately trying not to make contact.
Yep, winter has well and truly kicked in Down Under. And while sitting on the heater is comforting, it’s not going to prevent seasonal bugs from doing their worst.
Instead of spending the next few months shying away from the cold though, here’s how to tackle winter head on and forget the flu forever…
1. Dose up on zinc.
Keeping your immune system healthy is the best way to prep your bod for winter. We LOVE zinc because not only does it help fight off the nasties, but it’s good for your skin and energy levels too!
As precious as it is though, your body can’t store it up so it’s even more important to get your daily dose in. Try foods like pumpkin and sesame seeds, chickpeas and dark chocolate (yep, you read right!).
2. #JERF!
We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again – Just Eat Real Food! There’s truth in the saying that food is the best medicine, and eating whole foods is the way to go. For some anti-inflammatory action, add garlic and ginger to your meals – they literally taste delish in everything!
3. Sip on some soup.
What better way to boost your immune system in the cold, than with a warming soup? They’re also a great way to sneak in a heap of veggies. Check out our new eBook, I Quit Sugar: The Soups Cookbook, for 34 soup-er recipes to get you and your immune system through the chilly season!
4. Boost your protein intake.
While you’re hitting your veggie target with soups, don’t forget about protein! Protein plays a number of critical roles in the body, one of which is the building and boosting our levels of antibodies. This helps to strengthen the immune system and prep your body to fight off the bad guys.
5. Catch some zzzs.
Sleep deprivation can make you more susceptible to flu bugs. In other words – get your eight hours in!
But more importantly, being well rested supports your immune system and ensures you’re fit enough to fight off the flu when it hits. In the event you do get sick, catching some extra zzzs directs more of your energy to fighting inflammation and infection. Clever, huh?
