Has your “healthy” new year diet really been a sugar blowout?

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 21 February 2017 | 20:40

Did you go on a health kick at the beginning of this year?

It’s only natural to want to shake some of the sugary excess of the Christmas holidays with a refreshing diet of bright fruit and veg.

But what if we told you that your new year diet could have had more sugar than you’d eat during the silly season? Here’s how.

Fructose frenzy.

Beware the junk food in sheep’s clothing… or, um, something. Bliss balls and green juices might bear the healthy stamp of approval, but they’re full of hidden sugars in the form of high-fructose dates, syrups and liquidised/dried fruit.

Remember – a juice can have just as much sugar as soft drink, sending your insulin levels sky high and flooding your liver, where the excess sugar gets turned into fat. Yikes.

Crazy cravings.

A week or so into your raw/clean/detox diet, did you feel insane cravings for junk food? It’s not just because of your holiday mince pie habit.

The truth is, we need adequate amounts of proteins and (gasp) fats to keep us energised and satiated. You might be surprised how much easier it is to eat healthily when you allow yourself a little haloumi and butter.

Back on track.

If you’re guzzling green juices and craving cake, chances are you haven’t actually gotten rid of that sugar addiction that’s been building since Christmas. And going on a fad diet isn’t going to help!

The key to breaking your sugar addiction is cutting out all sugar for at least four weeks to allow your taste buds and appetite to recalibrate (don’t worry – you can reintroduce a healthy amount later).

We do this on the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program by supporting your system with plenty of veg, protein and healthy fats, all combined in delicious, easy-to-make recipes. That’s gotta be better than living on bliss balls.
