So you’ve decided to give quitting sugar a whirl.
You’ve whipped up a batch of Green Bacon Egg Cupcakes to get you through the 3pm slump and made a body scrub out of the white stuff in the pantry.
But, uh oh, it’s tea time. And what even is English Breakfast without a teaspoon of the sweet stuff? Never fear, there are plenty of teas out there that are not only just as sweet, they can help with those nasty sugar withdrawal symptoms, too.
1. Chai.
Chai is a staple in the IQS office. Warm, spicy with a hint of natural sweetness, it busts through any sugar craving that comes your way. If you’re buying chai from the supermarket, make sure you opt for a brand with no added sugar.
We love making our own from scratch (it’s much easier than you think) and spicing things up even more by adding our favourite anti-inflammatory spice, turmeric.

2. Fennel.
Sugar withdrawal making you feel bloated and blah? Fennel tea can help. The sweet, aromatic seeds have a compound which relaxes a crampy gut, allowing everything to pass through more easily.
3. Dandelion.
As you detox from sugar, it’s important to give your liver a little love! Dandelion has been used for centuries to support liver function, while emerging studies have found it to reduce the risk of fatty liver disease.
4. Cacao.
Cacao (not to be confused with cocoa) is the raw ingredient you get from unroasted cacao beans (the ones that also make chocolate).
Unsurprisingly, cacao tea has a delicious chocolatey flavour, making it the perfect naturally sweet fix. Cacao is also one of the richest dietary sources of magnesium, which can help to stabilise your blood sugar levels. Double boon.
5. Liquorice.
If you haven’t tried liquorice tea before, it’s going to change your life. Warm, nutty and naturally sweet, liquorice root can help combat stress, balance hormones and reduce inflammation, supporting the body while it does its detoxing thing.
6. Chamomile.
You might find your sleep patterns go a little haywire when you first step off the blood sugar roller coaster. A cup of chamomile tea before bed might be your saviour.
Aside from reducing inflammation, calming the gut and relieving cramps, this aromatic floral plant is a natural sedative, helping you catch plenty of restorative Zzzs (and quit sugar for good!).
