Petrol tank full? Tyres pumped? Spotify playlist downloaded? You’re set for the best road trip ever…
… except 20km in you realise you’ve left the all-important road trip snacks by the wayside! Which of course means you’re far more likely to find yourself face down in a Macca’s burger or raiding the servo fridge for a can of Coke to get you through the next 100km.
Got a road trip on the horizon? Make the ride extra sweet with these simple steps for cutting back on the sweet stuff (and avoiding the Maccas stop!).
Snack right.
Load up on healthy car-friendly snacks that you can nibble on along the way. Whip up a batch of our Sweet + Salty Granola Slice, Lamington Gummies or Lemon Zest + Thyme Hazelnuts to share.
And don’t forget to keep hydrated. Pack some water bottles and fill ‘em up each time you take a rest stop. Soft drink, you are not needed here!
Plan a picnic!
Maccas… Burger King… KFC… Let’s face it, road food is mostly really unhealthy. We suggest skipping the fast food joints all together and making a destination of lunch instead!
Find a national park or a scenic rest stop on your drive and plan yourself a picnic. Take a small esky of lunchy goodness (think cut up veggies with homemade dips, ingredients to build your own sangas or our Perfect Zucchini Slice) and don’t forget your picnic rug!
You can even wrap in a hike to stretch those legs and get some predestination fresh air. Doesn’t that sound SO much better than sitting a Burger King booth for an hour?!
Servo suggestions.
If you can’t make your own road trip snacks, there are still some decent service station options that’ll fuel your tank as well as your car’s.
Skip the soft drink fridges, lolly aisles and packaged pie ovens and opt for 85 per cent or more dark choc, cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, full-fat yoghurt, unsalted nuts or popcorn (minus vegetable oils and weird flavourings).
If you’re travelling on the east coast of Australia and you need something more substantial, Oliver’s Real Food has some healthier options. Go the soups, curries or sangas or salads (just ask for any dressings on the side).
