STUDY: Artificial sweeteners make your food cravings WORSE

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 12 July 2016 | 19:19

  • A new study reveals artificial sweeteners are linked to stronger food cravings.
  • Scientists believe that sweet tastes trigger the brain to demand more energy (calories).
  • While the study is small, this confirms what we’ve been saying for yonks!

If you’ve been using diet soft drink and chewing gum in an effort to suppress cravings, you could be making those cravings even stronger.

A new study from The University of Sydney claims that artificial sweetener consumption is linked to eating 30 per cent more food. Scientists believe it’s because the brain becomes confused when it senses sweetness without calories and increases appetite to make up for the lack of energy.

In fact, the subjects (admittedly non-human) which ate artificial sweeteners displayed starvation-like behaviour, like disturbed sleep patterns as their bodies forced them to seek more energy (hello, midnight snacks?!). Researchers also found that the artificial sweeteners made real sugar taste sweeter, intensifying cravings.

While the research is performed on fruit flies and mice, and focuses on just one sweetener (sucralose/Splenda), it’s not the first time we’ve heard this. And it confirms what we’ve been saying for ages: that sweeteners muck with your appetite and taste buds.

The only way to break your sugar addiction? Cut out the sweet stuff for good!

What do you think? Are artificial sweeteners a no-go?
