8 surprising beverages with more sugar than a can of Coke

Written By Unknown on Friday 24 June 2016 | 13:06

We all know a can of Coke is packed with sugar (9 teaspoons to be exact). But you might be surprised to learn where else the sweet stuff is lurking.

Soft drinks aside, the sugar content in some other everyday beverages never fails to shock us.

From takeaway coffee to a large glass of apple juice, your daily drink of choice could actually have more sugar than a can of Cola. Here are eight that we found.

  1. Boost Juice Green Tea Mango Mantra Original Size.

Teaspoons of sugar: 22

Yep, 22 teaspoons of sugar is likely to give you one heck of a “Boost”. Right before you come hurdling back to earth in the biggest sugar crash of all time. This juice contains more than double the 6–9 teaspoons of sugar per day that the WHO recommends.

  1. Starbucks Cinnamon Roll Frappuccino Venti.

Teaspoons of sugar: 20

Forget a can, this baby has as much sugar as a LITRE of Coca Cola in one cup. Most fraps in the Starbucks family have more than 15 teaspoons of sugar hiding under (and in) those piles of whipped cream.

  1. Oak Strawberry Milk 600ml.

Teaspoons of sugar: 16.2

Full-fat milk is an excellent source of calcium for healthy bones and teeth. But it’s kind of moot point when there’s probably enough sugar in there to rot your pearly whites! There are two recommended serves in the package, but are you really going to stop at half a carton?

  1. Gloria Jeans Very Vanilla Latte Large.

Teaspoons of sugar: 12.3

How many teaspoons sugar do you usually take in your morning brew? Half? Maybe one? How about a whopping 12 teaspoons of the sweet stuff? Talk about morning blues!

  1. McCafe Large Chai Latte With Skim Milk.

Teaspoons of sugar: 12.2

We’re not sure how the people at McDonalds managed to get more than 12 teaspoons of sugar into a chai latte, but they did! The skim milk version actually has more sugar than the full fat – not the “healthier” choice Big Food would have you believe. Our suggestion? Make your own chai instead.

  1. Daily Juice Company Apple Juice 500ml bottle.

Teaspoons of sugar: 12

With the amount of sugar packed into a bottle of this, we wouldn’t exactly recommend it as “daily juice”. “Not-in-a-thousand-years juice”, maybe…

  1. Real Coffee Ice Break 500ml bottle

Teaspoons of sugar: 11.4

Bad news for coffee lovers who think the bottled version is just as good as a DIY cuppa or one from the local cafĂ©. Most brands out there are packed with the sweet stuff. This “Real Coffee” blend comes crammed with more than 11 teaspoons. We’ll get our “extra shot” elsewhere, thanks.

  1. Golden Circle Sunshine Punch 375ml glass.

Teaspoons of sugar: 10

This fruity “Sunshine Punch” certainly does pack a punch! Of sugar. A large glass of this contains 10 teaspoons of the white stuff, kind of invalidating the nutritional claims of vitamin C.
