For years we scoffed at our grandmothers while they cooked with lard, spread butter on bread and refused to touch ready meals.
But it turns out Gran was onto a thing or two when it comes to eating well. From cooking from scratch to eating fats, here’s four tips the UK’s Hemsley sisters reckon she had right all along.
1. “Don’t eat processed foods.”
Your grandparents probably wouldn’t recognise many of the processed, preserved and packaged foods that are stocked at the supermarket today. Instead it’s more likely that they got their JERF on, with a focus on fresh meat, dairy and produce.
As a result, their diet was naturally lower in sugar and contained none of today’s unpronounceable ingredients that probably aren’t doing your health any favours.
The Hemsleys recommend toteing your own snacks to so you can avoid eating convenient but unhealthy processed options on the run.
2. “Cook from scratch.”
From baking their own bread to boiling beef bones, grandparents were the original pioneers of the artisanal homemade food movement. And while your nan’s domestic duties may have been a matter of necessity, when you learn to cook from scratch you’ll also arm yourself with the skills to make healthy eating easier than ever.
Maybe that’s why the Hemsley sisters have been known to indulge in a mugful of broth for breakfast…?
3. “Eat your butter!”
Whether eating full-fat dairy or whole eggs (yolks and all) our grandparents were onto the benefits of a fat-inclusive diet long ago.
And in a move that would make grandpa smile, Melissa and Jasmine admit they don’t do margarine. Instead, “you’ll always find butter in our fridge,” they say.
Heck, the sisters have even been known to tuck into a little liver on occasion.
4. “Waste not, want not.”
Melissa and Jasmine have perfected the art of freezer stacking. Just like our grandparents, they know that eating all the parts of your veggies (or popping them into a freezer bag for use later down the line) is a vital trick to avoiding food waste.

What cooking and eating tips and tricks do you use that would make grandma proud?
