Slash your grocery bill in half

Written By Unknown on Monday 18 September 2017 | 13:00

Do you walk out of the supermarket each week and wonder how on earth you spent so much money?

Instead of blaming the kids for stashing the trolley with a few extra goodies, it might be time to step back and reassess your supermarket strategy.

If you’re keen to cut your grocery bill in half, give these money-saving hacks a go…

Start with a list.

No surprises here, but if you head to the grocery store or farmer’s market with a shopping list in hand, you’ll save yourself both money and time. A list will ensure you walk out the door only with what you really need (instead of grabbing three more tins of coconut milk, just in case), and you’ll reduce your food waste in general as well. With Aussies throwing roughly 20 per cent of all their groceries in the bin, a shopping list could save you hundreds over the course of a year.

Hit up your local markets.

A common misconception is that farmer’s markets are more expensive than your supermarket, but we challenge you to head to your local market this weekend and have a wander around. Trust us, you’ll be surprised at how affordable fresh, local produce can really be!

Get familiar with the bulk bins.

You know when a recipe calls for a handful of walnuts so you buy a big bag of them, only to find the rest go off because you simply haven’t used them? Well, the bulk bins are set to change your life! By being mindful about the ingredients you buy and only buying what you need, you’ll save a bunch of cash, and slash your wastage as well. They’re a great way to get the kids trying new ingredients too as if you’re unsure whether walnuts are really going to tickle their fancy, you can just buy a few as opposed to a huge bag!

Shop in season.

It’s no surprise that seasonal produce is more affordable (and more delicious!). Fresh and local equates to lower prices as there’s more of a demand to keep that produce moving. Why? Because there’s simply more of it to go around! Not only that, but those exotic out-of-season fruit and veg are likely to have circumnavigated the world before landing in your supermarket – hence their exorbitant prices. Our top tip? Stick with seasonal produce and your wallet will thank you for it.

On our 8-Week Program you’ll find we stick to simple, seasonal ingredients so you only buy what you need!
