Worried about coconut oil? We set the record straight.

At IQS, we’ve always been outspoken on our stance surrounding saturated fats and their important place within a healthy diet.

As our founder Sarah has explained (many times, in fact):

“We are mostly made up of saturated fats. This is what we’re meant to eat. Saturated fats are crucial for absorbing vitamins, calcium uptake, immune function, and cell membrane structure. Eating the right saturated fats leads to increased tolerance to the sun, skin issues like acne or eczema clear up, drastically increased energy, the absence of food cravings, and peaceful sleep. And they can make you lose weight. Yes. That’s been my experience since I’ve upped my saturated fat levels.”

In response to the flurry of news stories this week however, it’s important to remember that the media loves a great headline – and really, what better target than the health food industry’s beloved coconut oil?

But, after doing our own digging into the report and reading the many, MANY, articles that have sprouted up online over the last day or two, we believe our mate, David Gillespie, explained it best on his Facebook page:

“The report is a highly selective analysis of studies conducted in the 1960s. I say highly selective because they manage to completely ignore two of the largest randomized control trials ever conducted on the question of healthy fat, the MCE and the Sydney Diet Heart Trial… The real evidence is damning – Saturated Fat (no matter the source) is ALWAYS a better choice than vegetable oil.”

We couldn’t agree more! And as always, at IQS we believe the best diet is one packed with veggies, low in sugar and one that includes monounsaturated fats like avocado and olive oil as well as saturated fat from coconut oil and good quality meat.
