- 70% of the Saudi population is classed as obese.
- Saudi Arabia consumes the highest amount of sugary beverages in the Middle East.
- This is a huge step forward from a country where there is no income tax and very few consumption taxes.
While most of us were relaxing over the weekend, Saudi Arabia was getting busy.
On June 11, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia introduced a 50 per cent tax on all high sugar and carbonated beverages.
This movement is an attempt to reduce obesity and growing waistlines which are pressing health issues in the UAE. It is expected to raise A$2.4 billion which will be put back into public health.
Saudi Arabia also introduced a 100% tax on tobacco.
The rest of the UAE is planning to implement the tax from October 1 this year.
Which country do you think should join the movement next?
