It’s fair to say that in today’s food culture, many of us are a little… detached from the way food arrives on your plate.
When you start eating real food, you might have some surprising revelations about how everyday vegetables are grown. Just have a look at Brussels sprouts!
1. Artichoke.
Did you know artichokes are actually flowers? Leave it long enough to grow and it will bloom vibrant purple petals worthy of a bouquet.
2. Asparagus.
Prepare to be mildly surprised, because asparagus grows straight out of the ground, almost like a very small bamboo shoot.
3. Avocado.
Avocado looks like a vegetable but it’s really a fruit. That means avos grow on trees, hanging pendulously on the branches.
4. Broccoli.
Broccoli is also technically a flower. It sprouts up from the soil, surrounded by big, cabbage-like leaves.
5. Brussels sprouts.
Brussels sprouts grow attached to big stalks with a cabbage-like head on top. They kind of look like plants from an alien sci-fi horror movie.
6. Capers.
Capers are actually the edible flower buds from a caper bush. And, if they fruit, they become the equally delicious caper berries!
7. Chickpeas.
We’re not exactly sure where we thought chickpeas came from, but we never expected them to grow in these single, green, fluffy pods.
8. Eggplant.
So eggplant is also a fruit and our entire lives are a lie. It grows like a very heavy, dark and misshapen tomato.
9. Leeks.
Like artichokes, leeks also flower if left to their own devices. This sadly makes them inedible but still… pretty!
Have any of these vegetables surprised you?
