5 quirky pantry staples you’ll always find in the IQS kitchen

Written By Unknown on Monday 29 May 2017 | 18:07

A good pantry is always stocked with the essentials – like eggs, flour and oil.

But there are a few pantry staples in the IQS kitchen that you won’t find on most shopping lists. They may seem quirky, but these ingredients easily take a meal from zero to 100.

1. Rice malt syrup.

We sweeten with fresh fruit or spices where we can. But when we don’t want to mess with the flavour (savoury dishes, for example) rice malt syrup is our fructose-free go-to. Need to stock up? You can grab a jar of I Quit Sugar: Organic Rice Malt Syrup exclusively at Woolworths.

2. Coconut butter.

You know coconut oil, milk, cream, even flour. But coconut butter is something of a hidden gem. It’s simply the blended meat of the coconut, and just a spoonful lends a sweet creaminess to any meal. Try it in soups, curries, sauces, spread on apple slices or simply out of the jar.

3. Turmeric.

We won’t go a day without throwing a spoon of turmeric into our meals. Not only does it have a vibrant colour and versatile hit of spice that works in everything from tikka masala to pancakes, but it’s also a powerful anti-inflammatory.

4. Sauerkraut.

We’ve raved about the gut-friendly benefits of sauerkraut before. But this funky ferment is also the perfect side for salads, grilled meats and roast dinners that need an extra kick. Not to mention it also lasts forever, thanks to the fermentation.

5. Miso paste.

Forget the little soup sachets. A good quality, preferably organic miso paste is like liquid gold for giving salad dressings, roast meat and veg or even desserts an umami flavour. And, great for budgeters, because a little goes a long way!
