5 everyday habits that are ruining your skin

Written By Unknown on Sunday 7 May 2017 | 23:05

You may be well beyond your teenage years. But for some reason, your skin is still stuck in the past!

Sound familiar? It could be down to these five everyday habits…

1. You sleep with your makeup on.

Ladies, we’re all guilty of doing this on the odd night out… but sleeping regularly with your makeup on can leave lasting effects on your skin.

It can lead to bacterial infections and clogged pores (um, hello blackheads). Even the makeup that stays behind on your pillow can continue to wreak havoc on your skin.

What can you do? Make sure to wash off all traces of makeup before bed (yes, even the clumpy mascara bits that are tough to get) and change and wash your pillow sheets regularly.

2. You don’t drink enough water.

Downing plenty of H2O not only helps fight off skin ageing, it also gives your skin the kind of healthy glow that beauty companies try to convince you to shell out hundreds of dollars to achieve. (We like things that are free!)

What can you do? Drink, drink, drink! Carry a drink bottle with you everywhere you go. Set goals of drinking a certain amount of glasses of water throughout the day. If you’re still struggling, check out these 12 ways to drink more H2O.

3. You’re on your mobile all the time.

Ever notice how quickly your touchscreen gets oily and dirty? Now imagine pressing that against your face… all day, every day. Not a pleasant thought, right?

All those germs and bacteria we touch with our hands throughout the day are transferred to our phones, which are then pressed and rubbed against the side of our face. This can lead to breakouts and small rashes all along your jawline and cheek. One study has even named this mobile phone dermatitis!

What can you do? Try minimising the amount of time your phone is pressed against your face by wearing earbuds or using a speaker to talk instead. Clean your phone screen regularly to keep it (and your skin) nice and fresh!

4. You crank up the AC.

You read that right. If your AC unit is always on full blast, you’re stripping the air of the humidity and moisture your skin needs to retain its youthful look and feel.

What can you do? If it’s not too hot, try opening some windows and using a fan to keep the air moving before resorting to air conditioning. Better for the planet, too!

5. You overdo it on the sugar.

Are we really all that surprised? Sugar (in all its many different forms) is not only bad for your insides, it’s bad for your skin, too.

Deep lines, wrinkles and saggy skin are partial byproducts of a process called glycation, where excess sugar molecules (from age and from consuming too many sugary foods) attach themselves to the collagen fibres in our skin, causing them to lose their strength and flexibility.

These are called AGEs (advanced glycosylation end products) and scientists have discovered that the longer we consume fructose, the higher the acceleration rate is for those AGEs. In layman’s terms: more fructose = saggier, thinner skin. Yikes!

What can you do? Try cutting down the amount of sugar you eat with these easy hacks. You can even sign up for our next I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program to kick that sugar habit for good!
