4 condiments you can make at home (so they’re not packed with sugar)

Love sweeping your sweet potato fries through tomato sauce? Or dunking your fish and chips into some creamy tartare?

Unfortunately, a lot of our favourite condiments can contain more sugar than a can of Coke. Yikes!

Don’t fall into the sneaky sugar trap! Try these homemade sugar-free condiment swaps for your next meal. Healthy, easy and, might we day, BETTER than the box!

1. Barbecue Sauce.

A 500 ml bottle of Masterfoods Barbecue Sauce contains a whopping 8.1 g of sugar per 15 ml serve. That’s nearly two teaspoons of sugar for every serving size of sauce! (And let’s be real here, who sticks to just one “serving size” of barbecue sauce?)

That’s why we created our own sugar-free and gluten-free Homemade BBQ Sauce. It’s simple and insanely flavoursome… not to mention added sugar-free!

2. Tomato Sauce.

A 560 ml bottle of Wattie’s Tomato Sauce has 4.6 g of sugar per 15 ml serve of sauce. While it’s not quite as bad as barbecue sauce, that’s still a little over one teaspoon of sugar per serve.

Our Homemade Tomato Sauce has all the flavour, without the sugar crash.

3. Tartare Sauce.

Who knew tangy, delicious tartare sauce could contain so much hidden sugar? A 340 ml bottle of Kraft Tartar Sauce contains 3 g of sugar per 30 ml serve.

Our homemade Tartare Sauce (perfect to pair with your next fish and chips) has all the flavour, with none of the sweetener.

4. Mayonnaise.

Not even mayonnaise is safe! Especially the fat-free kind… A 410 ml (410g) bottle of Praise Traditional Fat-Free Mayonnaise contains a 4.2 g of sugar per 20 ml serve.

Our creamy, sugar and additive free Homemade Mayonnaise is the perfect healthy condiment alternative for your next chicken burger. Enjoy!
