5 healthy habits from people who take their lunch to work

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 11 April 2017 | 18:04

Bringing your lunch to work is where it’s at. It’s tastier, healthier and won’t cost you a fortune.

But if you’re used to buying your lunch from the local café, making work lunches can seem a little time-consuming and tricky.

Don’t know where to begin? Here are five healthy habits to start today (check out the I Quit Sugar: The Lunchbox Book for even more tips, plus recipes!).

1. Prep a Sunday Cook-up.

We swear by a Sunday Cook-up on the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program. The idea is simple – prep ingredients on the weekend so you can easily reheat or throw together during the week.

“I always prep some roast veggies on the weekend. They’re great hot or cold, so I add them to almost anything!” says our associate product manager Matt.

2. Make your own sauces + dressings.

Salads and sandwiches get really soggy after just a few hours. Make a batch of salad dressings or sauces and keep them at work in the fridge. Add them just before you eat (they’ll also be way less sugary than the store-bought version).

“I’m currently onto a great Asian dressing. I take a jar of peanut butter with the dregs left in it. Add some tahini, a splash of tamari, lime juice and some coconut milk if I already have some opened. Shake and go!” says marketing executive (and self-proclaimed sauce expert) Alyssa.

3. Keep some easy upgrades.

Refresh a three-day old dinner with extra ingredients kept in your desk drawer. Ingredients like peanut butter, turmeric or sauerkraut can take any meal from zero to 100!

“I keep a jar of tahini at my desk,” says our recipes assistant Olivia. “It lasts forever and doesn’t require refrigeration. Tahini is amazing on top of any veggies, salad, porridge or on toast with banana and cinnamon!”

4. Master your microwave.

You can do way more with your work microwave than just heat leftovers. Cook eggs, muffins and even bacon in this magic machine (learn why microwaves are safe here).

“If my lunch needs a little extra protein, I’ll poach an egg in the microwave,” says senior writer and editor Camilla. “It takes one minute and gets you a perfect poachie every time. (I even wrote an article about it.)”

5. Don’t freak out of you need to buy your lunch.

Qué?! Let’s face it, we all have those days we forget our homemade lunch in the fridge at home. Know which takeaway and café options are healthiest so you’re never caught out.

“Knowing that a naked burrito bowl with jalapeno salsa actually isn’t that bad makes forgetting your lunch far less of a drama,” says our writer Rachel.
