7 wellness trends that are actually the real deal

Written By Unknown on Tuesday 28 March 2017 | 12:07

For every lemon detox and diet pill, there’s a wellness trend that actually delivers on its promises (well, most of the time).

The only problem is, you have to separate the organic wheat from the chaff. Confused about which wellness trends to actually pay attention to? These are proven to actually work!

1. Quitting sugar.

Unlike many other diets, quitting sugar doesn’t require starvation, calorie-counting or cutting out food groups (sugar is not a food group!). When you Just Eat Real Food – everything from vegetables to haloumi – you naturally quit sugar.

The science behind limiting sugar is solid. Eating too much of the stuff is linked to type 2 diabetes, liver disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer and more. The World Health Organization recommends a limit of six to nine teaspoons of free sugars daily – which is what we advise after completing the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program.

2. Turmeric.

No, you’re not imagining it – this earthy yellow spice is everywhere. And for good reason. The active compound, curcumin, is a powerful anti-inflammatory and could even prevent or treat diseases like autoimmunity, Alzheimer’s and cancer. We add it to everything!

3. Gut health.

Finally, the world has caught up to our gut health obsession! The gut houses 80 per cent of the immune system, so we gotta look after it. Gut bacteria imbalances are also linked to chronic health issues, weight gain, inflammation and even your mood. Pass us the kombucha!

4. Sustainability.

It’s not rocket science that we need to look after our planet. But sustainability also has great benefits for our health. Locally grown produce (preferably seasonal!) will be fresher and need less chemicals to keep it ripe. It’s cheaper, too!

5. Sweet potato.

One cup of sweet potato contains 214 per cent of your daily vitamin A needs, which is crucial for eye and skin health. Not to mention it’s also very rich in other nutrients like vitamin C, manganese, potassium and copper. Thank goodness, because they taste out of this world.

6. Healthy fats.

Fat is good for you – it just depends on which kinds you’re choosing. Stay away from highly processed vegetable oils and go for avocado (great for heart health), eggs (a source of vitamin D), extra virgin olive oil (anti-inflammatory) and oily fish (full of the healthiest fat, omega-3!).

7. Mindfulness.

Yoga and colouring books aren’t a passing trend. Mindfulness (or being “present”) has been shown to reduce stress and even treat anxiety and depression. Even just a mindful walk out in the fresh air could do wonders for your mental health.
