We need to bust this myth about healthy eating STAT

One of the most common problems we hear about cooking and eating healthily? It’s too expensive!

Seriously guys, it’s just NOT the case. With a few easy tricks, eating real food can be SO much cheaper that loading up on prepackaged rubbish or takeout. And SO much better for you.

The real “superfoods”.

Forget magic moon dust and expensive green powders. Our superfoods are plain old veggies. Spinach is just as nutritious as spirulina, and we’d choose blueberries over açaí products any day of the week.

As long as you’re packing your meals with a rainbow of fresh veg, some protein and a bit of healthy fat (and sticking to real, whole foods wherever possible), you’ll be giving your body all the nutrients it needs. Moondust, you are not needed here!

The joy of leftovers.

No, you don’t need to spend $15 on a café salad to eat healthy at lunchtime. Instead, cook a little extra at dinner time and have the leftovers for your lunch the next day.

You’ll save money, time AND ensure you’re midday meal packs a big nutritious punch. (This is one of the nifty tricks we teach you on the I Quit Sugar: 8-Week Program.)

‘Tis the season.

Seasonal fruit and veg is always going to be cheaper. Why? Supply and demand, people! When something’s in season, there’s usually of a lot more of it around.

Do some research and find out what’s in season in your area, and if there are any local farmers’ markets (or side-of-the-road stalls) near you.

(Check out Seasonal Food Guide Australia or if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, Eat the Seasons is a great resource for both the UK and the U.S.)

Grow your own.

Got a backyard? Balcony? Windowsill? Growing your own veggies is not only a cash-saver, it’s also totally organic, customisable, and really fun!

The grow-your-own approach works particularly well for herbs. They don’t need much space, and buying them constantly supermarket can really add up. Check out our guide to growing herbs on the windowsill for some quick tips.

Flexetarians.

As Sarah once said: “If they don’t have pink grapefruit, get over it.” Cooking your own food should be a fun, evolving, ever-expanding experience.

Be flexible, buy whatever’s on sale and get creative. Chuck in with what you already have in the pantry, or whatever’s about to go off in the fridge. You’ll save cash, the environment (and you might even discover a fantastic new dinner combo). Win, win, WIN.
