Can gelatin help clear your skin?

Written By Unknown on Monday 6 February 2017 | 17:20

If you’ve ever tried any skincare regime, you’ve probably heard of collagen.

This tissue-strengthening protein is like an elastic glue that holds the whole body together (literally).

Collagen is very important for maintaining soft, supple skin, but our natural production decreases after 25 (lucky us). So, what can you do to increase collagen without buying expensive lotions and potions? Let us introduce you to gelatin.

What is gelatin?

Gelatin is cooked collagen, made from the bones, hides and connective tissues of animals. It comes in sheets or powder that can be used to make all sorts of gut-loving goodies (like these Raspberry Gummies).

Similar to collagen, the amino acids in gelatin are like the building blocks of the skin. They may be able to help with the appearance of ageing skin by boosting skin strength and elasticity.

The gut-skin connection.

But that’s not all gelatin can do for your complexion!

Studies show that inflammation in the gut can weaken the protective function of our skin and cause us to break out. Gelatin comes to the rescue here. It’s packed with the potent anti-inflammatory amino acids glycine and proline, which work to reduce inflammation in the gut.

Other research suggests that gelatin may also help heal the gut lining by enhancing the secretion of gastric acid and replenishing the gut mucosa. This helps us absorb more nutrients and reduces gut inflammation even further.

In the clear.

By decreasing digestive stress, gelatin can play a role in supporting the body to eliminate toxins so they don’t build up in the skin and leave us feeling blotchy and blah.

And on top of all this, gelatin also contains glycine, which plays a role in regulating oestrogen levels. If you suffer from hormonal acne, gelatin-rich foods may assist the severity of outbreaks.

Keen to see if gelatin can work for your skin?

You can make tastier treats with our Gut Lovin’ Gelatin than with anything you’ll find on the cosmetics counter. Give it a go and let us know if you see any improvements!
