3 sweet ways to heal your gut this summer

Written By Unknown on Thursday, 2 February 2017 | 21:24

Just so you know, this is a sponsored post, but the opinions are our own and we have researched the topic and drawn our conclusions independently.

It’s only natural that we get a little overindulgent over the summer.

From Christmas to New Year’s to Australia Day and all the sunkissed celebrations in between, consuming more sugar, alcohol and junk food can cause bad bacteria to build up in our gut.

Luckily, you can get things back in balance by eating a number of gut-friendly foods. And we’re not just talking sauerkraut – check out these sweet, summery (but sugar-free) gut boosters!

1. Kombucha.

When it’s hotter than Ryan Gosling out there, it can be easy to reach for a fizzy drink. But the nine teaspoons of sugar in one can of Coke won’t do your gut any favours!

Instead, try kombucha. This effervescent fermented tea is packed with probiotic bacteria to help heal your gut and fight the bad bugs.

“In comparison to commercial, off-the-shelf probiotic pills, traditional fermented foods like kombucha have a much more diverse array of beneficial bacteria,” says co-founder of Remedy Kombucha, Sarah Condon.

“Probiotics support the natural ecosystem of your gut and improve your digestion – helping you to feel healthier, lighter and ultimately happier!”

Plus, kombucha tastes amazing! Remedy’s organic, unpasteurised formula has less than one per cent sugar, but uses fruit extracts for a delicately sweet taste. We LOVE their new Raspberry Lemonade flavour – for a refreshing summer cooler, try their mocktail recipe below!

2. Gummies.

You may think that lollies are out of the question when you’re sugar-free. May we introduce you to something even better – gelatin gummies!

Studies have shown that gelatin can help heal the gut mucosa (protective lining). It may also increase gastric juices, to help break down your food.

Gummies are SUPER easy to make, too. Try these Vanilla Peach Kombucha Gummies for double the gut-lovin’ goodness.

3. Chocolate.

Don’t freak out… but yes, sweet, sweet choccy could be good for your guts. According to the International Journal of Food Microbiology, chocolate is a probiotic.

Just remember to choose dark chocolate (85% cacao or higher) for the superior health benefits. Or better yet, make your own!
