In our crazy busy lives, we can easily forget to take a little time out for ourselves.
We can also forget what that time can do for our wellbeing. But the thing is, you don’t have to have take a two week holiday to benefit from a little R+R! A weekend escape out of the rat race will help you reconnect, reboot and recharge – just in time for Monday morning.
Getting back to nature.
Studies have shown links between a little nature time and stress relief, reduced inflammation, improved concentration, improved short term memory and even better vision.
Try it: Camping
Find a camping ground a few hours’ drive away from home (think nearby national parks or coastal towns) grab a tent, some pals and go bush for a couple of days.
If roughing it isn’t your thing, try glamping. Sarah tried it out at Paperbark Camp on the South Coast of NSW. “Paperbark is about 2–3 hours out of Sydney,” says Sarah. “A bunch of elevated, luxury tents scattered throughout dense bushland close to the sea. It’s blissful… silence. No humans. No lights.”
Embrace a little romance.
When life happens, it can be all too easy to neglect the relationships closest to us. But spending quality time together is crucial to a strong, satisfying and lasting relationship.
Try it: Romantic hotel getaway
The IQS leadership team spent an offsite day* at the beautiful Bells at Killcare in NSW. Surrounded by nothing but national parks, beaches and bays, it makes for the perfect romantic escape.
Bells offers luxurious “adults only” packages for two in their gorgeously fitted out cottages. Book some time at the onsite spa – you won’t be sorry!
* For business reasons, not for romance!
Reconnecting with the family.
A family that holidays together, lives longer and has fewer health issues, er, together.
Dozens of studies have demonstrated the health benefits of family time. One found that a lack of strong relationships increased the risk of premature death by a whopping 50 per cent!
Try it: Beach escape
Beach holidays are fun for the whole family. The Atlantic in Byron Bay is a great base to explore this friendly coastal town, says Sarah in her Guide to Byron Bay.
“Just like Byron there is a special magic to this place, a feeling of calm, where I totally feel relaxed. It’s the only place I stay when visiting paradise.”
Time for self reflection.
On the other hand, escaping alone can be a really rewarding experience. It gives you the time to switch off, check in on your wellbeing and just be with yourself.
Try it: Wellness retreat
Wellness retreats offer a variety of different experiences based on what you like – yoga, pilates, meditation or sleep. (Yas, sleep.)
Sarah loved Gwinganna in Queensland. “I spent a week there a few years ago doing a sleep retreat,” she says. “That particular retreat has since been turned into a “Triple S” retreat: focussing on sleep, stress and – would you know it – sugar. I’d highly recommend it.”
Where do you like to go to escape for the weekend?
