Don’t laugh, but the biggest food trend storming social media is not even a food… it’s dishware.
Yeah, we know putting your food in a bowl sounds kind of obvious, but hear us out! From warming porridge to simple rice and veggies, bowl food is nutritious and comforting (you can’t easily curl up on the couch with a plate, can you?).
Secretly, we reckon Sarah helped kickstart the bowl food trend with her famous “mish mash meals” on Instagram, which are almost always served in a bowl.
Now every foodie is jumping on the bandwagon. As Nigella Lawson writes in Simply Nigella (in which she dedicates a whole chapter to bowl food), “For me, ‘bowlfood’ is simply shorthand for food that is simultaneously soothing, bolstering, undemanding and sustaining.”
We love this trend because if you do it right eating your meal from a bowl is a healthy, customisable way to cook creatively (and use up your leftovers). And yeah, the bright abundance bowls and smoothie bowls are pretty photogenic, too. Here are a few of our favourite bowl food recipes.
1. Chicken Burrito Bowl
Whip up this burrito bowl next time you’re feeling a little mad for Mexican. You can build it around any veggies you have lurking in the back of the fridge and top it with shredded leftover chicken for the ultimate anti-waste meal.
2. Spring Roll Bowl
Spring rolls are delicious, but very fussy to make. Enter our Spring Roll Bowl! It combines everything you love about spring rolls in a fresh salad, paired with rice paper roll crisps that will CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
3. The Aloha Poke Bowl
Ditch your fancy dishes and serve your dinner Hawaiian-style, in a lei-d back bowl. This recipe for poke (pronounced poke-ay) combines bite-sized pieces of raw fish, rice and a citrusy dressing, to leave you feeling as happy as a hula dancer.
4. Nourishing Breakfast Bowl
An Aussie brekkie is all about the avocado and this one takes our adopted national fruit to the next level, pairing it with kale, pepitas and mung beans.
It’s just as delicious as avo toast (and equally Instagramable).
5. Salted Caramel Smoothie Bowl
With cashew butter, vanilla and maca, this frosty Salted Caramel Smoothie Bowl tastes just like a butterscotch sundae. Perfect for when you’re hankering for a bowl of ice-cream but don’t want the extra sugar hit.
