Why are smoothies better for you than juice?

Written By Unknown on Monday 17 October 2016 | 17:10

It’s not uncommon for a line to form at the blender on any given morning at IQS. We’re always whizzing up satiating smoothies to kick-start the day.

Drinking juice is another story entirely. Short version: we don’t. But why do we reckon smoothies are better for you than juice?

Smoothies satisfy.

While juices extract the juice from fruit and veg – tossing all that perfectly good pulp – smoothies blend the whole foods together. This keeps all the fibre and other good stuff in the drink, and keeps our tummies fuller for longer.

You can also add healthy fats and proteins to your smoothies – chia, oats, nut butter, coconut milk. These slow down the digestion and absorption of the sugar and ensure you’re fully satiated. Smoothies are basically a customisable meal in a cup (great if you’re on the go).

Plus, since some essential vitamins (A, D, E and K) hanging out in fruit and veg can only be absorbed by the body in the presence of fat, you just aren’t getting all that much out of a juice on its own.

Smoothies don’t swamp the liver with sugar.

Think about how many oranges it takes to make a glass of OJ (hint: about four). Would you actually be able to eat that many actual oranges in one sitting?

It doesn’t matter if you’re drinking it fresh or from a carton. When you strip all the fibre out of juice, there’s nothing in there to stop you from downing massive amounts of sugar (specifically fructose) in one go.

And since fructose is metabolised almost exclusively by the liver, this dumpage freaks it right out. While it can use smaller amounts of fructose from fruit and veg can for fuel, it quickly stores excess amounts as fat.

Smoothies don’t waste.

You wind up chucking half your fruit and veg when you juice them, and many of the nutrients get’s tossed, too. The great big contraptions needed to make juice aren’t particularly efficient, either!

Sure, you need a blender to make a smoothie. But blenders are much more versatile and can make things like dips, soups and spreads in addition to a tasty whole-food drink. Juicers make, well, juice.

You can get a heap of green veg into smoothies.

When it comes to smoothies, it’s so easy being green!

We prefer ours packed with plenty of vegetables and just a small amount of fruit, to make sure we’re getting our required serves of veg every day and not overloading the liver.

If you’re new to the green smoothie game, this Green Goddess Smoothie is an excellent place to start. Bottoms up!
