No longer just a favourite with our friends in the U.S. and the UK, Halloween is becoming a bigger deal here in Australia every year.
Witches, ghouls and spooky pumpkins aside, the scariest thing about this holiday is the massive amounts of sugar you’re probably going to come up against.
If you’re celebrating with a party, a dinner or a spot of trick or treating, here’s how to survive what’s traditionally one of the sweetest nights of the year.
Trick or treating with the kids.
Let’s face it, banishing the kids from all Halloween lollies is pretty unrealistic. But, you want to make sure they don’t go too overboard on the spooky choc.
We suggest filling their bellies with a good, nutrient-dense dinner before heading out to knock on the neighbours’ doors. Some Nourishing Nachos or Ham and Cheese Cauliflower Pizza are safe bets.
You could even put a spooky twist on one of their favourites – Homemade Tomato Sauce makes for great fake blood!
This approach might save you a candy-binge on Halloween night, but there’s still the leftover booty to consider. Rather than chucking the choc when the kids aren’t looking (think of the waste!) why not try one of these three strategies and teach the little ones a bit about giving back?
The Halloween party.
Heading out to BOOgie on Halloween night? You’ll want to sugar-proof your party shoes.
We suggest packing in the nutrients (with plenty of veg, protein and healthy fats) before you head out, staying hydrated (with water, not alcohol), and choosing your booze wisely.
And if you do fall into the hands of Candy Corn or mini Snickers bars, don’t freak! Living a low-sugar life is about being able to indulge occasionally without beating yourself up. Draw a line in the sand and get right back to healthy eating the next day.
Halloween treats that come IQS-approved.
If you are looking treat yourself without scary amounts of sugar, little and big kids will all love these healthy homemade Halloween treats.
Bloody Good Cheesecake
A spook-tacular showstopper that will make the perfect centrepiece at a Halloween dinner.
Not-So-Bat-For-You Cookies
These might be shaped like bats, but there’s nothing scary about what’s inside.
Gremlin Halloween Eyeballs
The spookiest thing about these ghastly eyeballs is that there’s KALE in them (and the kids will never know!).
