What your poo is saying to you (and 4 other warning signs from your body)

Written By Unknown on Monday, 5 September 2016 | 23:09

From phlegm to farts to stool size, what’s coming out of your body can tell you a lot about what’s going on inside.

And when it comes to staying healthy, changes in various, er, bodily fluids are great indicators that there’s potential room for improvement.

Sometimes the fix is as simple as changing up what you’re eating or getting your ol’ eight a day. Other times it can indicate a deeper issue that’s best to have checked out by a doctor.

Here are some common warning signs to look out for, and how to fix them (or know when it’s time to visit the GP).

1. Your wees have changed colour.

If you’ve noticed your wees getting a little darker, you’re most likely dehydrated. Upping your water intake should lighten things up again.

Foods can also change the shades of our number one’s. Beet eating beets? Don’t be surprised if your wee is bright pink! Chowing down on carrots? Foods high in beta carotene can turn your urine a sunny shade of orange. Too much asparagus? You might see a tinge of green (and notice an unpleasant smell…).

But if the colour change is accompanied by pain or you notice any other hues (like red or very dark brown), it’s best to make an appointment with the GP as soon as you can.

2. Your pooping like a rabbit.

Small pellet-like poos are a surefire sign you’re a bit, er, backed up. Constipation is usually pretty easy to fix – just drink more water, eat plenty of fibrous foods like veggies, oats and whole grains, and get some exercise.

But if that doesn’t set things in motion again, it might be worth checking in with your doctor. Rarely, these kinds of number two’s indicate an actual obstruction going on somewhere down below.

3. Your phlegm is a little grey.

Grey, ashy phlegm can be a sign of an upper respiratory tract infection or sinus congestion. Talk to your doctor about the best course of action.

It can also be that you’re inhaling too many air pollutants. Is it time to spend a little quality time with nature?

4. Your earwax is sticky.

Sticky, dry, light, dark… most earwax is totally normal (and actually comes down to your genes!).

But if you notice a discharge that isn’t anything like earwax at all, it could be a sign of an impaction. This is where some pesky wax has snuck too far into the ear canal and got stuck there.

The worst thing you can do in this case? Try to get it out yourself. Always, ALWAYS visit a doctor and let them sort anything to do with ears and wax.

5. You’ve been ripping super rancid farts.

While it’s totally normal for farts to be a bit smelly, eye-watering stinkers that clear the room could come down to what you’re eating.

Read up on which foods could be causing your Krakatoa-like gas emissions, and if you’re really concerned, a quick visit to the naturopath or doctor could be in order.
