6 simple steps to spring clean your diet

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, 20 September 2016 | 23:22

It’s spring. Time to throw open the shutters, brush away the dust and make a fresh, clean start.

And while you’re busy tidying the nooks and crannies of your house, it may that your pantry – and your diet – needs a good clear-out, too.

Whether you’ve been overindulging over winter and want to get rid of that heavy feeling, or you’re just ready to let a little brightness into your life, these six tips will have you spring clean your diet in no time.

1. Junk the junk.

Spring is the perfect time to take stock and recognise areas where we might need improvement. Clear your cupboards of highly processed and sugary foods, especially ones you might eat fairly regularly, like vegetable oils, sandwich spreads and cereal. But don’t worry – you can make your own healthy versions in no time!

When the IQS team feel we’ve overdone it, we reach for a fresh green smoothie. Not only are they the ~easiest~ way to get vegetables into your diet, they also give your digestive system a bit of a break. Go for recipes with plenty of veg, fibre, fats and minimal fruit (check out our low-fructose green smoothies here).

Winter foods are very beige – potatoes, pies, pasta. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, spring is the perfect opportunity to load up on colourful, antioxidant rich foods. Try getting at least three hues into your meal!

Spring is not just time for flowers to grow – you should be looking after your gut garden, too. Heal your microbiome by replenishing good gut bacteria with probiotic foods (like kombucha, kimchi and yoghurt) and staying away from junk.

With the change of season, new sustainable and locally-grown produce is available. Ditch the preserved stuff (except for frozen local produce) for seasonal varieties – look for fresh asparagus, broccoli, fennel, for example.

6. Ice, ice baby.

It might have been easy in winter to drink plenty of water, simply because you warmed up with so many cups of tea and hot cacao. Don’t get dehydrated – simply add ice (or even frozen berries) to your herbal tea for a refreshing, skin-clearing beverage.
