It’s a wrap! 6 supermarket wraps tried and tested

Written By Unknown on Wednesday 17 August 2016 | 18:03

Following on from that time we taste-tested five of the healthiest supermarket breads, we decided to suss out another lunchtime favourite – the wrap!

Is there such a thing as the perfect wrap? One that actually wraps, is widely available and doesn’t have a list of ingredients as long as our arms?

Though it’s true that many come with weird additives, preservatives and artificial colours, it turns out there are a few good options on the market. And most are super low in sugar.

From superfood to pita-like to soft circles with hard ingredients, here’s our wrap up of six supermarket wraps. Let the wrap battle begin!

1. MEB White Pita Khobz, $2.99 for 5 wraps.

Okay, so pita bread is not TECHNICALLY a wrap. But with no added preservatives, sugar, vegetable oils or other additives, we just had to include this one. It was also an office favourite for taste and wrapability.

“Love that classic pita taste! It’s tasty, just the right amount of chewy and holds everything together well. Plus, it could double as a pizza base.” – Camilla, senior writer and editor

2. Mountain Bread Quinoa Wraps, $3.99 for 8 wraps.

Mountain Bread gets top points from us for keeping its ingredients super simple (and why should a wrap be anything more than flour, water and a pinch of salt?). But they are super thin. You wouldn’t want to overstuff them!

“Zero points for wrapability, you’d need at least two to hold anything together. But these actually make amazing chips if you rip them up and roast them in the oven with olive oil, salt and sumac.” – Alyssa, marketing executive

3. Superfoods Organic Wraps, Chia Spinach Kale & Broccoli. $4.95 for 6 wraps.

You know we’re fans of squeezing veg into practically everything, so we’re loving the creative use of greens in this wrap (though we’d always choose fresh over powdered if we could). We’d love to see less of the additive Humectant (422) in there, too.

“I like that you can taste the broccoli in here. I’d wrap with it again!” – Camilla

“It holds together well, so it would be a great vehicle for other exciting fillings.” – Alyssa

4. B Free Be Wheat and Gluten Free Wraps, Quinoa & Chia Seed, $7.99 for 6 wraps.

While these don’t have the perfect ingredients list (we’d take out the canola oil, thickening agents and preservatives if we could), they’re miles better than most of gluten-free options out there. B Free has managed to pack no less than 12 grains and seeds into these babies too, which makes for a great multigrain texture!

“Let’s face it, your GF wrap options out there are pretty limited. I’m really surprised by how well this holds together – most GF options fall apart at the slightest touch! And like it doesn’t taste like cardboard either!” – Megan, operations manager (and resident GFer)

5. Superfoods Organic Wraps, Chickpeas, Quinoa and Beetroot, $4.95 for 6 wraps.

We loved the vibrant colour of this wrap, but it didn’t hold together as well as the Superfoods Broccoli version.

“It’s so pretty and tastes fine (if not like beetroot at all). But it completely breaks apart when you try to wrap it.” – Rachel, writer

“No complaints on taste! But seriously, what even is Humectant 422?” – Lee, social media manager

6. Wattle Valley Soft Sourdough Wraps, $4.00 for 6 wraps.

We were intrigued by these sourdough wraps (because, you know, sourdough is pretty much the best bread). However, though we can’t knock the smoothness, structure or sourdough-y taste, there are just way too many additives in these for us to give them the thumbs up.

“I would give full points for softness here and I’m impressed by the subtle sourdough taste. But the mile-long ingredients list is definitely an issue.” – Lorna, head of content

“Tastes a bit artificial for a sourdough wrap… that’s probably the 13 different 3-digit numbers in the ingredients! Pass me the real stuff, thanks!” – Hannah, recipe development assistant
